Parish Registers
The transcripts of the St Leonards registers up to the mid 1930s were copied from documents completed by Gerald Stratford in the late 1960s. Gerald started with the Bishops Transcripts which run from the 1600s and went on to the parish registers up to the mid 1930s. Copies of these books are held in the church and also in Rotherham Archives. I completed the transcripts to up to about 1970. The first records which will go on the website will cover 1900 to 1970 as this seems to be the period most people want to find information from. Eventually we hope to include all the registers up to the present day.
All the original registers, apart from those in current use, are held in Sheffield Archives. For research purposes the archives ask that microfiches are used to preserve the irreplaceable originals but you can ask to see the originals to look at particular entries. I believe Rotherham Archives also have copies of the microfiches.
These transcripts come with a warning! The originals are sometimes very difficult to read and Gerald and I being only human will have made mistakes. If you are a serious family history researcher please use these transcripts only as a guide and go to the originals to confirm your findings. If you find an error please let us know and it will be corrected.
Linda
PS If you have difficulty reading any of the transcriptions or are aware of any errors please let us know and we will try our best to help.
